There are two upcoming changes shift how funders, NIH and NSF, approach data management planning. Data Management and Sharing Plans (DMSPs) are becoming structured inputs that can be more easily reviewed, compared, and tracked over the course of a project. NIH will require an updated format for DMSPs effective May 25, 2026 (NOT-OD-26-046). NSF announced that starting on April 27, 2026 their DMSPs will be required to be completed as a form on Research.gov rather than uploaded as a separate document.
