A recent blog posted by Noni Byrnes Director, NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR), discuses how the scientific peer review process benefits when reviewers bring a broad range of backgrounds and varying perspectives. CSR removed the requirement to have at least 50 percent full professors on committees and is encouraging review officers to focus on scientific contributions, in a range of ways. Data shows that the pool of eligible reviewers has not been exhausted, As of January 1, 2020, 22,608 individuals had active R01 funding. Thirty percent served one to five times, and 18 percent have never served in the last 12 years. Out of the reviewers who have served one to five times, 26 percent (assistant professors) and 34 percent (associate professors). Read the blog for the full analysis, as well as changes in policy.
