Interim Research Guidance and Next Steps

HMS and HSDM Research Community

The federal government announced Monday night that it was freezing more than $2 billion in federal research funds following the University’s response to an updated and expanded list of demands issued last Friday (see President Garber’s full letter to the Harvard community).

The University and the Medical School are working together to evaluate the full scope of the government’s announcement. Importantly, no preemptive actions should be taken, and individuals should continue to conduct their research under the terms of their award unless a stop work order, termination, or other notification interrupting an award is received. If this happens, faculty investigators should take the steps noted in the Interim Research Guidance immediately, in consultation with ORA and ARI.
